The Strains They Are A-Changin’

Aloha Fairbanks! We are long overdue on giving you an update on how things are rolling down at Pakalolo Supply Company.  We are happy to say the ball could not be rolling more smoothly with our new hours.  While they provide consistency to the customers knowing we will have product for their purchasing pleasure every weekend, they also allow us to work on projects behind the scenes that make showtime as enjoyable as possible every Friday and Saturday.  We are focused on improving each area of our operation which allows the business as a whole to work like a well oiled machine (so cliche bro). We have news to bring you from each of those areas today that will get you excited about what’s just on the horizon, or has already arrived… Let’s dab right in!

What Is On the Horizon

In addition to the sun, which is creeping higher above the horizon as we inch closer to summer solstice, we have began brand new genetics in our cultivation.  I must emphasize the word ‘began’ as we have just germinated the seeds.  So maybe it’s a little farther than the horizon, but I must also emphasize the ‘brand new’ part because these are strains from our ‘ohana (family) in Hawaii, the Pua Mana Pakalolo  seed bank, that will soon be apart of our signature strain series (yep, the gold poptop).  Similar to Mauna Kea White Fire OG, these new genetics have never been cultivated at the industrial level until they entered our possession. In fact they have only been grown by our braddas from Pua Mana  because they just bred the genetics relatively recently.  We have started both Maui Mango Diesel and Caramel Kona Coffee Kush.  Besides having the coolest strain names ever, we have heard only admiration about the quality, look, smell and taste.

The Caramel Kona Coffee Kush is a cross between Caramel Kush and a Hawaii born strain, Kona Gold.  The description from Leafly follows:

“Kona Gold is a sativa strain that has traveled far from its native origin, the volcanic soils of Hawaii’s Big Island. Soaring cerebral-focused euphoria captures the mind while leaving the body light and functional, making this sativa a perfect pair with or replacement for your morning cup of coffee. A tropical medley of pineapple and citrus flavors are cut by a sharp sour aroma that could almost be compared to diesel fuel”

Maui Mango Diesel is a cross between Brooklyn Mango:

“Brooklyn Mango, bred by Dr. Underground, is a hybrid that combines Ed Rosenthal Super Bud with NYC Diesel. The resulting buds carry a mix of diesel and tropical fruit flavors, like pineapple, mango, and lemon. The effects of Brooklyn Mango are a mix of cerebral energy with calm and comforting body relaxation.”

and Maui Wowie:

“Maui Wowie (not Maui Waui) is a classic sativa whose tropical flavors and stress-relieving qualities will float you straight to the shores of Hawaii where this strain was originally born and raised. Since its beginnings in the island’s volcanic soil, Maui Wowie has spread across the world to bless us with its sweet pineapple flavors and high-energy euphoria. Lightweight sativa effects allow your mind to drift away to creative escapes, while Maui Wowie’s motivating, active effects may be all you need to get outside and enjoy the sun”

We are proud to add these signature, unique strains to our cultivation so that we can soon share it with the people of Alaska.  Alaska and Hawaii have always had a strong connection being the outlying states who’s cultures vary to a large degree from the rest of the 48.  We wanted to continue that tradition with Pakalolo Supply Co. and being able to cultivate these new strains, that are an evolution of these very old and storied traditional Hawaiian genetics, allows us to do that.  We are very excited for the day we are able to put a poptop with these genetics inside in your hand and transport you to the Hawaiian Islands.

Don’t worry, until then we have another new strain that is much closer to being packaged and put on our shelves for retail.  This strain is called Jilly Bean and one batch is already in the flowering stage.  Though it has not been in our store before it is well known as it won the Denver Cannabis Cup in 2014.  The description from leafly follows:

jilly-bean-marijuana“Jillybean is described as being an upbeat and happy hybrid, with flavors of tangy orange and mango. This strain is a top choice for creative minds and social butterflies looking for unencumbered euphoria during daytime hours. Bred by crossing Orange Velvet andSpace Queen, Jillybean often expresses herself in deep hues of maroon on the leaves.”

It is a beautiful plant and we hope the high is just as beautiful.  Our hopes are definitely high since it won the Denver Cannabis Cup.  If you have tried it let us know what you think in the comments!

 What Has Already Arrived

We have successfully created a new type of currency here at Pakalolo Supply Company.  It does have its limits as it can only be redeemed at our retail store but that’s what makes it so cool!  Introducing… PakaCash!

img_3195

PakaCash are our new gift certificates.  They come in $25.00 intervals, you can buy as many as you like and they are a one time use only.  That is why we made them at a $25.00 price point, so that for example you would be able to purchase a gram and then pick out an accessory such as some rolling papers or a small pipe to use up the remaining amount.  Of course, you may also use them in combination with actual cash a purchase total over $25.00.  We believe these will make great, simple gifts for almost any occasion. Whether you know someone who hasn’t made it out to a cannabis retail shop, or you got a friend who is the ultimate connoisseur, hook them up with some PakaCash to let ’em know you care ;). .  I know what I’m getting my friends for their birthdays from now on!

We have two new strains on our menu this week: Headband, which is a first timer from our own cultivation, and Afghani Kush, that is making its return from Black Rapids’ cultivation.  Come on in and give them a whirl. Don’t forget we are now offering a limited amount of clones when available!  You can check out our full menu at PakaloloSupplyCo.com or Weedmaps.com. Thank you for stopping by the PakaBlog.  We hope the update served you well and the associated news will soon come to fruition. See you next time, Mahalo.

It’s Friday Folks and We’re Ready for Retail

Happy Friday! We are on to the second weekend of our new reduced business hours, and though they are not ideal for many reasons, they seem to be successfully serving their purpose.  We know the move to reduce our hours is not perfect but we also know that it will allow us to provide our patrons (that’s you) a level of consistency that every customer wants in a business.  We truly appreciate your patience and understanding during the slower times as we work to allow the industry to catch up with the demand.  For now instead of keeping our doors open everyday and clearing out our stock, only to have to close our doors until we have more bud harvested, trimmed, cured and tested, you know we will be open every Friday and Saturday to get you stocked up for the week.  We understand that some would argue that consistency implies being open on a more frequent basis and we hear you.  Unfortunately, it is simply not possible at this point in time where the amount of cultivators that are up and running is very low, and those that are open are still working out the kinks and expanding their grows, just as we are, in an industry that was illegal a few years ago.  The process of growing marijuana itself is quite time-consuming with the minimum time for a crop from clone to harvest at about 3-4 months. Not to mention the requirements put in place by the state such as testing, proper labeling and packaging, etc.  We want more than anything to be able to provide all 100,000 residents of the Fairbanks North Star Borough with the desired amount of herb that they like to consume.  We can say 100% without a doubt that is the goal we want to reach, and we believe we will. In the mean time, we can be sure to be open every Friday and Saturday until we can get back to a full week schedule…  And soon we will be because we are on a constant mission, along with all the other licensed cultivators, to upgrade, expand and improve our cultivation infrastructure so that we can serve Fairbanks the highest quality marijuana at the highest rate possible, to complete our ultimate goal in the normalization of this exciting industry! …. (nailed it!)

Attack of the Clones

We have some exciting news for all you (aspiring) gardeners out there.  This week will mark the first time we have clones for sale at Pakalolo Supply Company! We believe this also marks a huge milestone in the goal of normalizing the retail cannabis industry when you know you can go to the store and buy some cannabis plants for your home or garden.  It puts a smile on my face just thinking about it!  For those of you that don’t know, clones are very young, basically baby, marijuana plants that start out as a branch cut from matured female plants in the vegetative stage.  The cuts are placed into a growing medium with a rooting hormone and are kept very moist until they are fully rooted.  The clones we’ll have in store today and tomorrow are fully rooted in 4×4 inches of soil, slightly below 8 inches tall and ready to be moved into a bigger pot to take on nutrients and a higher wattage light source. In other words, they are ready for adoption by a responsible guardian who can nurture them into adult life where they can have clone babies and beautiful frosty buds of their own one day!

Northern Lights are out tonight.
img_3124
They are so adorable at this age!

This weekend we will be offering both Northern Lights (pictured above) and Girl Scout Cookies clones at $30 a piece for you cultivation pleasure.  You will see them behind our corner counter, right when you walk in the door, glowing in a flourescent aura.  They will be waiting here for you to take them home whether you are an experienced cannabis cultivator, a green thumb that has always wanted to take a whack at cannabis or even a complete beginner.  However, they most likely won’t be waiting very long as we have a very limited supply at approximately 25 total.  It is to be expected as it is a gift that will keep on giving if handled correctly. Not to mention that Northern Lights and Girl Scout Cookies could be considered cult classics… On your mark. Get set! GO!

What’s on the Menu?

pakalolo-menu-2-4

pakalolo-menu-2-3

This weekend our menu has everything our menu had last week in addition to the return of Cannalope Haze from Subsistence Products a sativa dominant hybrid coming in at 15.5% THC. The following read is from the description on Leafly:

“Like the name suggests, Cannalope Haze is a sweet mix of tropical, melon, and floral flavors. Almost a pure sativa that crosses Haze Brothers Original Haze and a Mexican landrace, this strain is a great solution for fatigue and when struggling with appetite loss.”

We also are featuring Sunrise Garden’s Session Joints which are low-cost, low THC prerolls at 8% THC and a price of only $8.  If you would like to see the full menu please visit our website at www.PakaloloSupplyCo.com/menu.html where you can view our Weedmaps interactive menu and stream the menu that appears on the televisions in store. Thanks for stopping by to catch up and we hope to see you this weekend at Pakalolo Supply Company. Mahalo!

Are We There Yet…?

Well folks it’s one week down and one week to go.  Yes, you read correctly.  We will be opening next Friday 3pm-8pm and Saturday 12pm-6pm and with our menu offering the biggest selection of strains to date!  We have received the test results for our harvest of Girl Scout Cookies and have been hard at work weighing, packaging and labeling the product for retail.  We are now awaiting the test results for the next harvest in line consisting of not 1, not 2, not even 3 but 5 different strains! (That was my best infomercial impression)  Some of them are returning favorites such as Mauna Kea White Fire OG and Northern Lights.  We will also see Pele Fire OG making its second appearance.  On top of those we will have 2 brand new strains that will be rearing their beautiful buds for the first time in our store front.  I can’t specify what they are in this blog post but if you look hard enough you can figure out at least one of the strains.  I’ll even give you a hint: its a fictional fruit from an old classic film ;).  We will also still have Orange Passion, CBD Critical Mass and The Cure on shelves for your purchasing pleasure.  That puts us at a total of 9 strains for next Friday and Saturday!  We are very excited to open our doors back up with the the biggest variety and highest quality of cannabis product in the state of Alaska.    We expect it to be quite the whirlwind of awesomeness and hope to see each and everyone of you there.

We are extremely grateful for your patience during our down time as we all wait for the industry to catch up to expectations.  However, since this hasn’t happened yet we are working on coming up with new business hours that will sustain the amount of legal marijuana available in the state right now.  This way, instead of closing our doors for a 2-3 week span again, we will open our doors once or twice a week, similar to what we are doing next weekend, so that you can stock up.  We will update you with a blog post as soon as we lock in hours that we think will serve the community to the best of our capabilities while also keeping our doors open consistently the same hours every week.

Check back next week for a blog post about our Hawaiian roots and how they have influenced our business from when it was just idea until now where it is full fledged. Thanks for staying tuned and we well see you next weekend for the marijuana mayhem that will undoubtedly follow our doors opening… Mahalo!

Behind Closed Doors

Greetings fellow Fairbanksans, and happy new year! The days leading up to Christmas we had an increased flow of eager customers as any retail shop does.  Whether you were picking up some pop tops full of joy as gifts, or picking up a some Christmas trees to light up yourself, you pretty much cleaned us out!  This is a relatively good problem to have and we are very, very appreciative of your patronage. By now many of you have discovered that we have not been open for business our normal hours of operation.  In fact we have not been open at all since Christmas besides New Year’s Eve, which we opened the doors for one last push to get as many customers stocked up to bring in the new year. Unfortunately, our doors will now be closed short-term as we harvest, trim and cure our next crop and get samples of flower down to CannTest in Anchorage for testing, once the bud is appropriately cured.  These processes together will take about two weeks giving us the opportunity to open our doors the week of January 16.  We know that this news is disappointing and can be frustrating for those that depend on us to get their cannabis. Believe me when I see that we are just as disappointed and wish nothing more than to be able to open our doors everyday for our normal operating hours to ensure that as many of you as possible are happily supplied with the highest quality marijuana in town. As the industry continues to grow in 2017, this wish will become a reality.

We are currently expanding our cultivation so that we can keep up with the outstanding demand of the North Star Borough.  Also, more local cultivators will get their licensing and begin to ween their baby plants into their adult life where they will produce beautiful, fully cured buds to put on our shelves giving us a larger variety of strains.  Then as the number of licensed cultivators grows in both Fairbanks and Anchorage, hopefully less of the product cultivated here will be sent down to Anchorage for the larger margin.  These processes will take time in an industry that is as closely monitored as legal retail marijuana.  There are no corners to cut and we pride ourselves on doing things the way they are intended and required by the state.  We want to be the marijuana retail and cultivation facility that is used as an example for following guidelines. It will show the state, and those that are not convinced, that legalizing marijuana was the right choice. That it can be as normal as purchasing a bottle of wine  (not to mention less harmful) while generating enormous amounts of revenue for our mighty state of Alaska.    This will help to normalize an industry that right now is still heavily scrutinized by some.

Though our doors are closed to the public our team is still very hard at work everyday at Pakalolo Supply Company so that when we open them back up we can bring you the best experience purchasing cannabis in the state.   Right now members of our team are prepping for reopening by harvesting, trimming and packaging product and our master growers are constantly putting in work into our ever evolving cultivation.  Our plants live the duration of their entire life in 4×4 beds using a method called no-till farming. No-till farming is exactly what it sounds like.  The soil in the beds is treated like a living organism as it is very microbial rich and is never replaced, or tilled..  The same soil, which is basically untouched, is used again for the next batch of plants.

img_2919
Notice the green cover over the soil

This creates an ecosystem in each of the 4×4 beds and increases the amount of water that infiltrates into the soil, organic matter retention and cycling of nutrients making the soil more resilient. This allows each batch of plants, due to the evolution of the bed, to result in better looking, smelling and tasting flower with higher THC or CBD percentages and terpene content (flavor and smell).  We also support the growth of our plants using made in-house, all natural nutrients made using Korean farming methods.  This involves the use of fruit, vegetables and herb as well as the process of fermentation to break down and recycle the waste created by the cannabis plants.  Though we pride ourselves on quality above quantity, as we reach the pinnacle of evolution in our no-till beds and our plants are producing the highest quality marijuana in the state, the yields will follow lead and grow as well.  As this happens we will continue to increase our level of production to fit as many plants as possible to happily grow in “the old Frito-lay place”.

We are also updating our retail store front in a number of ways.  The next time you walk into Pakalolo Supply Co. you will notice that it is easier to see what is currently being offered on our menu.  Instead of having to glance at the paper menu taped to the glass on the way in the door, or wait until you get to the front of the line to get your hands on that piece of paper, you will notice beautiful full HD  40″ televisions mounted to the wall behind the counters.  These monitors will display our menu in a colorful and easy to read manner.

img_2917img_2918

This will allow you to view the menu as you wait in line or browse the store while waiting for your turn at the register with one of our knowledgeable budtenders.  That way customers will more often know what they want when they get to the counter.  This will help to get ganja in the customer’s pocket and out the door more conveniently and comfortably.  This is not to say we want customers rushing themselves by any means.  We are more than happy to answer any questions, elaborate on any concerns and let people view and smell the product before purchasing.  After all making the purchase in a legal retail cannabis shop is half the fun and something we have all been waiting on for decades. We think the TV menus are going to look pretty slick in our store front and we can’t wait to see what you think!

Going forward we will be posting a “Weekly Update,” similar to this one every Friday as close to noon as possible.  It will contain updates about new strains, product, upgrades to our facility as well as any news effecting our business hours (which we hope will not happen very often, or ever).  Besides the “Weekly Update,” we hope to have other occasional snap shot posts about marijuana, our cultivation, employees and other miscellaneous topics centered around our store and this industry. We encourage you to take a minute every day to check our website @ http://www.pakalolosupplyco.com to view our menu and read the PakaBlog for any and all information that you could possibly need about Pakalolo Supply Company.

Once again we would like apologize for the inconvenience of cutting back our business hours and thank your for your understanding.  We should have our doors open the week of January 16 and hope to see all of you here.  Mahalo!

Pakalolo Supply Co. Will Temporarily Reduce Retail Store Hours

Due to the enormous rush of eager Fairbanksans to stock up before the Christmas weekend, transporting and testing facilities taking time off for the holidays and delays from local cultivators to bring their products to our shelves, Pakalolo Supply Co. retail store will be reducing our hours.  We will remain closed this week December 27-29, but will be open Friday December 30th to get everyone stocked up to bring in the New Year. We will then will be taking a short hiatus from cannabis sales until our next crop has been tested and approved for sale and we receive more product from partner cultivators. We will still be here in the building nurturing our plants, expanding our grow capacity and taking this time to do make some improvements our facility while we await test results, product from partner cultivators and harvest our next crop.

We anticipate the process of having the product dried, cured, tested and approved and the associated hiatus will take 1 to 2 weeks and we will reopen our doors at that time.  Our next round of plants are on schedule and we are in the process of adding another grow room to expand our harvest size and frequency.  We are also very excited about some new local cultivators getting their very first crop finished and ready to put on our shelves in the coming weeks.

We apologize for the inconvenience and hope for your understanding as we continually work within this new industry to get to a point where the supply of legal cannabis meets the amazing demand of the fine people of Fairbanks!

We hope to see you Friday, December 30th. Mahalo for your understanding, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Christmas and Cannabis Cheer

Christmas day is almost upon us and holiday cheer is flowing through the town of Fairbanks, the place that we are proud to call our home.  Christmas lights are strung, decorations are hung and festivity baking and cooking has begun.  I’m sure by now most homes have their Christmas trees fastened into a stand in their main living room completely lit up with sparkling lights towering above the children below, who are undoubtedly holding up presents to their ear as they shake them in an attempt to determine what could be inside. There are also some that like to light up another kind of tree during Christmas, and if you are reading this post you are most likely one of those people.  Of course, I’m talking about cannabis and if you are hoping to purchase some holiday herb for the weekend don’t hesitate to stop by Pakalolo Supply Co. today, Friday December 23rd.  Whether you’re on your way home from work or you’re out doing your last minute gift shopping today is your last chance before Christmas as we will be closed Saturday, Sunday and Monday for the holiday.  The majority of the staff at Pakalolo has been working long hours and 7 days a week to keep the gears turning so that we can do our best to consistently keep our customers happy.  We have been planting, watering, transplanting, cropping, trimming, testing, packaging, printing, labeling and serving literally nonstop since before the doors were even opened up to the public in order to keep up with demand, and we couldn’t be happier to do so.  It has been a whirlwind of hard work and reward for everyone involved. Still, the process has taken a lot of energy out of us all and we are excited to be able to take a few days to, not only spend the best part of the year with our families and loved ones, but to rest and rejuvenate so that when we come back we are as full of energy as humanly possible so that we can continue to serve the city of Fairbanks to the best of our abilities.

If you do end up making it in today we have a new strain on the menu!  It is called Cannalope Haze and it is grown by Subsistence Products, a fellow Fairbanks area cultivator.  The Leafly description is as follows…

“Like the name suggests, Cannalope Haze is a sweet mix of tropical, melon, and floral flavors. Almost a pure sativa that crosses Haze Brothers Original Haze and a Mexican landrace, this strain is a great solution for fatigue and when struggling with appetite loss.”

img_2875

Now if you celebrate the holidays like I do, Christmas is a 2 day marathon of eating, watching sports and exchanging presents, then Cannalope Haze is the perfect strain.  I definitely can use a solution for fatigue and a loss of appetite when I’m already about to bust at the seams from just the snack platter and dinner hasn’t even been served yet!  Cannalope Haze is a sativa so it does get your brain and metabolism moving, and if you are wondering it does indeed smell and taste like cantaloupe.  We have a limited amount of 1 gram units so if you want to try it out I suggest arriving at the time the doors open at 3:00pm.

We also have SupaJoints! I’m sure many of you are wondering what exactly is “supa” about a SupaJoint.  First off they are much bigger than our normal sized prerolls weighing at about 1.3g compared to the 0.8g of the smaller joints.  On top of that the trim used to roll the SupaJoints is very, very high quality.  We recently purchased a tumbler trim machine to increase productivity.  The way it works is by spinning untrimmed buds in a pipe shaped colander and whatever pokes through the holes gets chopped by blades spinning on the other side.  However, in the process small pieces of flower also get the axe and end up in our trim containers along with a ton of kief.  Kief is the name for THC trichomes (crystals) that break loose from the bud when being handled.  In the end our super trim is kief, trim and flower mixed together which basically amounts to ground up marijuana! The SupaJoints come at a great holiday price at $15.

Happy Turkey Day Fairbanks!

We are oh so grateful.

We truly hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving to its fullest potential, and yes, the pun was intended! We hope your insides are as overstuffed as a turkey is with dressing because there is nothing better than the marathon of eating, drinking and lounging that we get to gratefully enjoy with our families and loved ones to celebrate this traditional American holiday. Whether you go all out at home with a giant feast inviting everyone you know, or you still go to your mom’s place so you can watch football while she happily prepares the best meal you will have all year, Thanksgiving never gets old and it never will.  Though the holiday has come and gone, there is still so much to be thankful for.  For example we are extremely grateful for the ongoing support Fairbanks is showing to us at Pakalolo Supply Company.  Every single day at 3:00 pm when we open our doors there is a line of enthusiastic Fairbanksans of all walks of life, ranging from first timers to experienced marijuana connoisseurs, stretching out into our parking lot.  This is not only important to us but to the marijuana industry as a whole and many of you, if not all, understand that.  There is strong passion for marijuana that is expressed every day by our customers visiting our retail store.  Sometimes the passion is expressed verbally but other other times you can just see the excitement in the customers eyes.  The people of Alaska spoke with the vote to legalize and your actions continue to show that it was not a mistake.  For us, it’s simply an amazing feeling to be a part of fulfilling a desire that so many people have wanted for as long as…. Well, forever! There are still some who do not agree with marijuana legalization and will continue to fight it going forward, which is why we want to express how thankful we are to each of our customers on Thanksgiving… THANK YOU!!!

As you may know already, Pakalolo Supply Co. is taking advantage of the holiday to take and short break and will be closed for the rest of Thanksgiving weekend and will reopen on Monday, November 28 for business.  However, when we open on Monday we will be opening with a brand new strain called Shiva on our shelves that everyone at Pakalolo is very eager to try themselves.

20161125_120924

20161125_121053

Shiva, testing at 24% THC, is a rare sativa strain that was grown in our own cultivation facility requiring flowering for 14 weeks, which is about twice as long most hybrid strains. Sativa strains are rare in part due to the time required to bloom as well as there tendency to stretch and get very tall.  For that reason people used genetics to create hybrid strains that have shorter bloom phases and smaller, more manageable plants  The fact that they are rare is exactly why we were willing to put in the time and effort to bring it to our store front.  The high from sativa strains is energizing, cerebral and well suited for daytime use. They are also said to promote deep conversation and enhance creativity and can also give you a sense of well being and happiness making it ideal for social situations.  We are very thrilled to be able to bring something unique into our store and curious to see what each and everyone of you think about it.  We only have a limited amount of Shiva of so if you intend on giving it a try the early bird gets the worm! 😉 See you on Monday.

Mahalo!
