It’s Springtime…

And Terpenes Are In the Air!

Aloha friends! Long time no blog.  We apologize for the unexpected lack of a post last week.  Fortunately, I can assure you we put that energy into upgrades and preparations as we ramp up for the first Alaska summer with legal cannabis!  As spring time fast approaches in Fairbanks you can always feel the resulting spring in the people’s step.  That spring is approximately 50% relief that the 6 months of cold and darkness is finally over and 50% anticipation of the amazing summers we are blessed with every year as residents of Alaska.  I feel like there is an extra boost of eagerness this year and spring hasn’t even really started yet.  My guess is that it has something to do with a new industry that generates an easily measurable degree of interest and excitement (and tax dollars to help our city and state). Summer will ignite that industry with a dab torch!  We will start to see the full potential of what legal cannabis has to offer and the positive effects it can have on so many different levels such as generating tax revenue for our City and State and driving tourism to boost the local economy.  From the recreational perspective, we will start to see higher quality bud and new types of products in the retail shops such as ours.  There will be more events such as the Cannabis Classic (we’ll get to this early next week right here on the PakaBlog) that support the growth of the industry.  C’mon summer hurry it up already!

Oh and speaking of new products, we got more than one of those up our sleeve that you could possibly be seeing very soon.  We have been putting in a lot of thought into bringing you marijuana in new and unique ways that provide convenience, sharability, value or even a little bit of lavishness in some upcoming products.  We want to present these products in cool new ways that will continue to push forward our goal of normalizing cannabis in our community to be treated as an adult choice to be made for a variety of reasons.  You should be hearing more about these products next week.  Here’s a little sneak peak at one of them…. 😉

Onto an exciting update from Pakalolo cultivation! The hard work and extra effort that our team puts into combining feeding techniques found in Korean Natural Farming (KNF) with no-till farming is really starting to pay huge dividends in the form of quality in our cannabis. It just keeps getting better and better! This can be shown by our amazing high terpene results found from our latest harvest of Alaskan Blueberry. Let’s take a little closer look at terpenes…

Terpenes, created by the same glands in marijuana that make THC and CBD, are fragrant oils that give different strains their individual smell and flavor. Terpenes give strains like Blueberry the blueberry smell and taste and Sour Diesel its pungent gasoline like funk. Terpenes are also what makes natural essential oils such as lavender and eucalyptus their smells that can be diffused to fill a room. More recent, and much more interesting studies are starting to show the effect the terpenes have on your mood and how you actually feel as they interact with cannabinoids and your brain chemistry. does a great job of explaining it:

“Terpenes interact with the endocannabinoid system in a similar way to cannabinoids. When inhaled or ingested, the terpenes act as an assistant to cannabinoids as they work to penetrate the blood-brain barrier. Myrcene, for example, is known to increase cell permeability allowing for faster absorption of THC and other cannabinoids.

Terpenes can also influence neurotransmitters in the brain. For example they can affect dopamine and serotonin production and destruction. This insight gives us an idea of why different strains not only smell and taste different, but also have different affects on our mood or high sensation. Limonene, another common terpene found in cannabis, can increase serotonin production thus elevating your mood.”

Terpenes are highest in marijuana that is grown more naturally such as in soil with naturally occurring nutrients and giving the plants the ability to take in exactly what it wants and needs to grow healthy and create the highest quality final product. Our plants live in the same bed their entire life consuming nutrients through fermented fruit and vegetable juices and oriental herbal nutrients (OHN) that we make right here from items found in a quick grocery store trip to the organic section. What we are trying to do is create a grow medium for our plants that is basically a small ecosystem chalk full of organic food for the plants. Using these amazing natural grow methods our Alaskan Blueberry has some of the highest terpenes in the state! The AK Blueberry from this harvest is just covered in frost (trichomes full of THC, CBD and terpenes) and has a deliciously sweet and pungent smell with notes of sour and taste similar to a handful of half big sweet/half small tart blueberries. The delicious smell is made up of different terpenes. Below is an image of the flower and its terpene profile:

I know, I know you are probably asking yourself, “What the heck does this mean?” Well let us, or Leafly I should say, give you a hand with figuring some of that out. The terpene that has the highest percentage in our AK Blueberry is Myrcene so well start with that.  The following is taken from a Leafly article describing the proven effects that naturally occurring terpenes have:

Smell: Musky, cloves, earthy, herbal with notes of citrus and tropical fruit.
Effects: Relaxation, comfort
Associated effects in body: Antioxidant, anti-carcinogenic; good for muscle tension, pain, insomnia, depression.
Also Found In: Mango, lemongrass, thyme, hops.

Smell: Floral, citrus, candy, sweet
Effects: Anxiety relief, sedative qualities
Associated effects in body: Anti-anxiety, anti-convulsant, anti-depressant, acne treatment
Also Found In: Lavender

Smell: Citrus
Effects: Elevated mood and stress relief
Associated effects in body: Anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, heartburn, depression
Also Found In: Fruit rinds, rosemary, juniper, peppermint”

Isn’t it simply amazing what cannabis, a little natural growing plant in this endless universe, has to offer us?!  On top of the benefits of terpenes, it is extremely cool just to have access to this information when purchasing a specific strain. You will know exactly what to expect based on some scientific data based off the compounds as well as your nose and your taste buds. The way that terpenes are smelled, tasted and interpreted in cannabis is the exact same as a  wine connoisseur determining quality, depth of flavor, region, and vintage of the wine they are tasting and smelling. This is what we mean when we say our goal is normalizing the marijuana industry. We want you to be as educated as possible and feel like a master cannabis connoisseur when coming to purchase the finest at Pakalolo Supply Company. Going forward we will begin to test the the terpene profiles of our “Pakalolo Grown” strains, so that when you go home to kick-back, relax and smoke you will have a good idea of how the marijuana can effect your brain chemistry and in turn, your mood and how you feel. Our favorite thing about the terpenes is definitely that those itty bitty little natural compounds make the buds smell and taste so000 ono! (delicious)

That’s all we got for you PakaBloggers today. We are working on adding a section to our website to include recent terpene profiles of our strains when the rest of the results come back from testing soon. Next week we will have some new product reveals that we are anxious to share with you. We will also be discussing the Cannabis Classic and how to nominate/vote on your favorite cannabis retail related awards so check back soon. We hope you made it into Pakalolo this weekend to get your hands on some of the latest “Pakalolo Grown” harvest while it lasts. See you next time, mahalo!

Bonus Blog for Brand New Buds

Aloha Fairbanks! We are back for the second day in a row with another amazing dose of incoming product news.  We are more than pleased to announce another exciting collaboration with a Fairbanks cultivation company, :Alaska Cannabis Cultivators.  Branden Roybal, a local hard-working carpenter who own and runs ACC, has a goal to support the local Fairbanks market exclusively. We are very grateful for Roybal’s decision to keep it local and help our city become the cannabis capital of Alaska.  We believe his contribution to Fairbanks’ market, in addition to upcoming harvests (getting cut down as we speak) from our own cultivation and Einstein Labs’ concentrates, will provide the consistent flow of marijuana product in our retail store that will allow us begin expanding back to our original hours while maintaining a varied selection with a healthy back stock.

Mr. Roybal had previous experience growing marijuana as a hobby, so let us be the first to vouch for his product by saying that his hobby has definitely paid off!  His flower is grown using a soil-less medium and hydroponics style watering system.  We received our first batch of Alaska Cannabis Cultivators’ high quality product last night and have it on our shelves today. He unloaded two different strains on us of some very pretty, hand trimmed bud, completely covered in trichomes.

The first of those two strains is Snow White coming in at 24.23% THC and 0.06% CBD. The description from Leafly is as follows:

“Snow White is a 65/35 indica/sativa hybrid. Early and abundant resin production is attributed to her White Widow mother.  Flowering finishes in a standard 60 to 70 days from start and provides a nice balanced and steady high.”

The other strain is Afgooey is hitting at 21.62% THC and 0.06% CBD.  Leafly’s description:

“A potent indica strain that is believed to descend from an Afghani indica and Maui Haze. Its sativa parent may lend Afgoo some uplifting, creative qualities, but this strain undoubtedly takes after its indica parent as it primarily delivers relaxing, sleepy effects alongside its earthy pine flavor.”

That’s it for this week PakaBloggers but expect this type of product news to become more and more regular as the industry continues to grow.  Hope to see you today or tomorrow to try out Alaska Cannabis Cultivators’ beautiful buds or Einstein Labs’ potent concentrates. Check out our full menu on and don’t forget to check back on the PakaBlog next week.  Mahalo!

It’s Time To Concentrate

Howzit Fairbanks?  We have got a fun update for you this time around. Tomorrow we will have some new products on our shelves thanks to Einstein Labs down in Anchorage.  In doing so will mark the first time a retail store in Fairbanks will have legal cannabis concentrates for sale.  Many of you have been patiently waiting for this moment (as have we) and we are very happy to be able to tell you that there is only 1 more day until that moment finally arrives… Huzzah!

Cannabis concentrates is a wide-ranging term that refers to a number of different products: hash, oil, wax, shatter, etc.  However, all concentrates are manufactured similarly by stripping the cannabinoids, such as THC and CBD, off the plant through the use of solvents such as CO2, butane and ethanol (even ice water can be used in the extraction process of making hash).  Afterwards the solvents are purged from the product through the use of heat, pressure and evaporation leaving you with a product of various different consistencies of concentrated cannabinoids (THC and CBD).  Oh and don’t worry, being that all marijuana product in Alaska is tested, any concentrates are guaranteed to be purged of any solvents to a safe level for consumption.

Over the last ten years concentrates have quickly grown to being one of the most common ways to indulge in cannabinoids for many reasons. First, there are implied health advantages when it comes to concentrates. They are easily heated to the temperature that they vaporizes at (284 degrees farenheit) so that it can be inhaled to get the desired effect. Vaporizing is comparable to water evaporating.  No combustion (burning) is taking place, which means you’ll be inhaling vapor instead of smoke which is often smoother, more efficient and even tastier than traditional smoke. Another advantage is that they do not leave a lasting odor as smoke does. Therefore people like them for their home because they can vaporize all day without leaving that ganja smell for those of you who wish to remain stealthy. 🙂  Concentrates also have a level of convenience that people enjoy. By having a vape pen loaded with concentrates you have everything you need.  You can simply pull it our of your pocket, take a pull and you are good to go versus carrying around some marijuana, a pipe and a lighter where you must load, light, cash and repeat each time you want to smoke. Due to the ease and quickness of use people love them for outdoor activities, such as hiking or snowboarding, when loading up a pipe and trying to keep a lighter lit just isn’t a viable option. Those who desire only CBD appreciate concentrates as well because they can purchase concentrates that isolate the CBD so there are no psychoactive effects from THC. We don’t have CBD concentrates at the moment but they will inevitably make their way into our store sometime in the near future. Concentrates are now being widely used for cooking/baking edibles too. Using a concentrate with a high THC percentage makes dosing much simpler as can be read about here. Annnnd the list goes on but I’m sure you understand why cannabis concentrates have become so popular so I’ll stop blabbing in excitement… Let’s get to revealing those new products!

We are very delighted to be working with Justin Roland and the rest of the Einstein Labs team down in Anchorage, AK.  We were able to go visit their facility last month and we were blown away by the way they are building their business.  To put it simply, they are doing it right!  We all knew right away we could make big things happen by putting our heads together. So we did, and the first of those big things is providing concentrates to the people of Fairbanks. Mr. Roland is personally, and graciously, traveling to Fairbanks this week with some of their awesome products. On Friday we will have a limited amount of shatter.  Shatter is Butane Hash Oil (BHO) that acts similar to a sheet of brittle glass in its stable form.  It is easily broken, or shattered, at cooler temperatures into smaller pieces for smoking, whether to take a dab or load into a vaporizer.

Fun Fact: The word dab is sort of dynamic as it can be used in multiple ways.  People use it to refer to concentrates in general or a specific amount of concentrates. However,  earlier I was referring to a specific process of consuming concentrates.  “Taking a dab,” involves touching a predetermined amount of concentrates to a surface that is heated enough to vaporize it instantly in its entirety so that it may be inhaled (one dab’ll do ya)

Einstein Labs will also be bringing E * Blunt pre-loaded vaporizer pens ( filled with their own 47% THC cannabis concentrate oil.  E * Blunt, also an Alaskan company, manufactures vaporizer pens that are infused with flavors made from natural terpenes. We have Tropical Punch and Mango flavored Slims as can be seen below.   We know these products are going to be a great addition to our store and we are eager to see how everyone responds to them. But be on the lookout! further down the line Einstein Labs will be providing us with edibles to sell in our store as well.  The first of which will be something called Leaf Chews.  Leaf Chews are similar to Starbursts and are infused with CO2 hash oil!  Those should be in store in the next few weeks. We will keep you updated as that time comes closer.

Thanks for hangin’at the PakaBlog friends! We will be open Friday 3pm to 8pm and Saturday noon to 6, as usual. Check out to see our full menu and location, and don’t forget to check back on the PakaBlog for updates.  See you all this weekend. Mahalo!
